How to Use a De-Esser on Rap Vocals in FL Studio 2026: Remove Harsh Sibilance
If your rap vocals sound sharp and piercing on the letter S sounds, you have a sibilance problem. A de-esser is the professional tool that fixes this, and it is one of the most underused plugins in home studio setups.
Most beginning producers skip de-essers because they do not understand what sibilance actually is or why it matters. Once you hear the difference it makes, you will use one on every vocal track you record.

What Is Sibilance and Why Does It Matter?

This is called frequency-aware compression, or sidechain compression with an EQ filter. When an S sound hits, the de-esser measures that frequency peak, and if it is above your threshold, it turns down just that frequency band by the amount you set with the ratio.
FL Studio De-Esser Options
FL Studio does not come with a dedicated de-esser plugin, but you have three professional options that all work:
Option 1: Fruity Parametric EQ 2 Plus Sidechain Compression
The most affordable approach. Use Fruity Parametric EQ 2 as a sidechain to a compressor. This gives you exact frequency control and is how many professionals do it in FL Studio because it is simpler to visualize.
Steps:
- Insert Fruity Parametric EQ 2 on a mixer track
- Narrow one band to 5kHz and boost it by 12dB (you are isolating sibilance)
- Chain a Fruity Compressor after it
- Route the EQ output to the compressor sidechain
- Set the compressor to listen only to that 5kHz band
- When the S sound hits, the 5kHz peak triggers compression on the whole vocal
This method is visual, controllable, and sounds excellent.
Option 2: Waves C6 Multiband Compressor
The industry standard. Waves C6 is a multiband compressor that splits your vocal into six frequency bands and lets you compress each one independently. De-essing is just one band of this. If you have access to Waves C6, load it on your vocal and isolate the 5kHz band.
The downside: Waves C6 costs money and requires a separate purchase outside FL Studio.
Option 3: TDR Nova by Tokyo Dawn Labs
A free multiband dynamic EQ. Tokyo Dawn Labs makes professional tools and released Nova for free. It lets you apply frequency-specific compression, expansion, or gating to any band. Use it on the 4kHz to 8kHz band and set it to compress sibilance.

For this guide, I am going to show you the Fruity Parametric EQ approach because every FL Studio user has access to it and the concept is the easiest to understand.
Step-by-Step: De-Esser Setup in FL Studio
Step 1: Route Your Vocal to a Mixer Track
In FL Studio, route your vocal into an empty mixer track (not Master). You are going to add plugins to this track, so you need a dedicated channel.
Step 2: Insert Fruity Parametric EQ 2 Plus
Right-click the mixer track and insert Fruity Parametric EQ 2 Plus.
Open the plugin and locate the Band 2 (the middle band). You are going to use this to isolate sibilance.
Step 3: Boost the Sibilance Frequency
In Band 2, set:
- Frequency: 5.5 kHz
- Gain: +12 dB
- Q (bandwidth): 2.0 (narrow band)
This boosts sibilance so it becomes obvious when it peaks. You are not making your vocal brighter. You are just exaggerating the S sounds for sidechain control.
Listen to a word with hard S sounds (like "success" or "sound"). You should hear those S consonants jump out. That boost is telling you exactly what frequency the de-esser will target.
Step 4: Insert a Fruity Compressor
After the EQ, insert a Fruity Compressor on the same mixer track.
Step 5: Set Sidechain to the EQ
In the Fruity Compressor settings:
- Open the Sidechain dropdown and select the Fruity Parametric EQ 2 you just created
- The compressor will now listen ONLY to that boosted 5.5 kHz band
Step 6: Set Compressor Ratio and Threshold
Set:
- Threshold: -20 dB (when sibilance peaks, it will exceed -20 dB and trigger compression)
- Ratio: 4:1 to 8:1 (soft-knee ratio)
- Attack: 5 ms (fast enough to catch the S sound)
- Release: 100 ms (lets the vocal breathe)
Adjust these while listening to your vocal. If sibilance is still sharp, lower the threshold or increase the ratio. If you are compressing the vocal too much overall, raise the threshold.
Step 7: Reduce the EQ Boost
Once the compressor is set up correctly, go back to the EQ and reduce Band 2 from +12 dB back down to 0 dB (flat). You do not want your final vocal to be brighter. The boost was only for sidechain control.
De-Esser Settings for Different Rap Styles
Trap Vocals
Trap tends to have bright, airy vocals in a modern style. Sibilance is more noticeable because the mids and highs are emphasized.
- Frequency: 5.5 kHz to 6 kHz
- Compressor Ratio: 6:1
- Threshold: -18 dB
- Attack: 3 ms
- Release: 150 ms
Drill Vocals
Drill vocals are usually more aggressive and forward. Sibilance is harsh because the vocal sits right on top of a minimal beat. The S sounds need more aggressive control.
- Frequency: 4.5 kHz to 5 kHz
- Compressor Ratio: 8:1
- Threshold: -20 dB
- Attack: 2 ms
- Release: 100 ms
Melodic Rap
Melodic rap (like Juice WRLD, The Kid LAROI, Tory Lanez) has vocal runs and sustained notes. Sibilance happens on those runs. Use a lighter touch so you do not catch non-sibilant parts of the vocal.
- Frequency: 5 kHz to 5.5 kHz
- Compressor Ratio: 4:1
- Threshold: -22 dB
- Attack: 5 ms
- Release: 200 ms
Common De-Esser Mistakes
Mistake 1: Setting the threshold too low.
If your threshold is too low, the compressor will activate on every bit of high-frequency content in the vocal, not just sibilance. This crushes the vocal. Start high and lower it gradually until you hear the S sounds being controlled.
Mistake 2: Not using a sidechain.
If you put a compressor directly on your vocal without a sidechain EQ, you are compressing the whole signal every time any frequency peaks. This will squash the vocal unevenly. Always use a sidechain filter to target only sibilance.
Mistake 3: Overdoing the ratio.
A ratio of 8:1 or 10:1 is too aggressive for everyday use. Start at 4:1 and only increase if sibilance is still a problem. You want to control sibilance, not remove it completely. Some brightness is good.
Mistake 4: Using a de-esser on a vocal that is already well-recorded.
If your vocalist or sample is already clean with minimal sibilance, you do not need a de-esser. Not every track needs one. Use your ears.

De-essers are not a fix for bad vocal recordings. If your microphone is picking up too much room noise or your recording technique is poor, a de-esser will not save it. De-essers control sibilance. They do not fix background noise, clipping, or proximity effect.
If your vocal was recorded with a good technique and a decent microphone, a de-esser will make it sound more professional. If your vocal was recorded poorly, a de-esser is a band-aid.
