What Is Vocal Compression and How to Use It on Rap Vocals in FL Studio 2026
Compression is one of the most misunderstood tools in mixing, and it's the difference between amateur vocals and professional ones. Yet most producers either don't use it or use it wrong.
If your rap vocals sound thin, buried, or inconsistent in volume, compression is your answer. But it's not magic — it's just a tool that makes quiet parts louder and loud parts quieter, all under your control.

What Is Compression, Actually?
Compression reduces the volume of loud parts automatically. Here's the mental model:
When your vocal hits a volume threshold you set, the compressor turns down the gain. The louder the vocal goes, the more it gets turned down. This keeps your vocal in a consistent "zone" so it never gets lost in the mix and never jumps out unexpectedly.
Without compression: your verse has some words that are 6dB louder than others. The listener hears some words jump out, then drop back. Your ears are working to follow it.
With compression: all those words sit at roughly the same perceived level. The listener doesn't have to work. The vocal stays locked in the mix.

The Four Controls You Need to Know
Every compressor has these four knobs (in FL Studio's stock Fruity Compressor):
Threshold — The volume level above which compression kicks in. Example: set it to -20dB, and anything louder than -20dB gets compressed. Anything quieter passes through unchanged.
Ratio — How hard the compressor pushes back once you hit the threshold. A 4:1 ratio means for every 4dB you go over threshold, only 1dB comes out. A 12:1 ratio is aggressive — you barely hear any volume change no matter how hard you hit it.
Attack — How fast the compressor reacts when the signal hits threshold. Fast attack (1-5ms) catches everything. Slow attack (50-200ms) lets the beginning of the vocal punch through uncompressed, then clamps down on the sustain.
Release — How long it takes the compressor to stop working after the signal drops below threshold. Fast release (20-100ms) bounces back quickly. Slow release (100ms-500ms) keeps squeezing the signal even after it quiets down, which can add glue.

Vocal Compression Settings for Rap in FL Studio
Here's a starting point that works for most rap vocals. Use these settings on the Fruity Compressor (stock FL Studio):
- Threshold: -15dB - Ratio: 4:1 - Attack: 10ms - Release: 100ms
What this does: kicks in at -15dB (catches most of your vocal peaks), softens them to 1/4 their original overkill (4:1), reacts quickly enough to catch the attack but lets a little punch through (10ms), and releases smoothly (100ms) so you hear glue instead of pumping.
This is a gentle to moderate setting. It helps without obviously squashing the vocal. Try it first, then adjust.

How to Adjust for Your Specific Vocal
If the vocal still sounds inconsistent: Lower the threshold to -20dB or lower, or raise the ratio to 6:1. Either change makes compression kick in harder and more often.
If the compression is too aggressive or pumpy: Raise the attack to 30-50ms (lets more of the transient through, sounds less squashed) or lower the ratio to 2:1 (softer compression overall).
If the vocal feels lifeless or lacks punch: Raise the attack to 50-100ms so the very beginning of each syllable (the transient) slips through uncompressed. This keeps punch while the compressor controls the body of the vocal.
If the vocal feels mushy or weird: Your release is probably too slow. Drop it to 50-75ms. Or you're over-compressing (ratio too high). Try 2:1 or 3:1 first.

Multi-Band Compression — When You Need It
Standard compression works on the entire vocal. But sometimes you only want to compress certain frequencies.
Example: Your vocal has a boxy low-mid (200-400Hz) that gets boomy when it's loud, but you want to keep the brightness up top. Multi-band compression lets you compress just that frequency range.

1. Duplicate the vocal track 2. EQ the duplicate to isolate the problem frequency (e.g. cut everything except 200-400Hz) 3. Compress just that duplicate heavily 4. Blend it back under the original at 30-50% volume

Compression After Other Plugins — Chain Order Matters
If you're already using EQ before compression, that's correct. The typical chain is:

Compressing after EQ means you're controlling the dynamics of the shaped tone, not the raw vocal. That's right.
Don't put reverb before compression — the compressor will see the reverb tail as a loud signal and misbehave. Reverb always goes last.

Listening vs. Guessing
Here's the fastest way to hear what compression actually does:
1. Insert a compressor on your vocal 2. Set threshold low (-30dB) and ratio high (12:1) 3. Turn the knob until it's obviously over-compressing (you'll hear pumping) 4. Now back off slowly and listen for when it stops sounding weird and starts sounding professional
That's your "sweet spot" for that particular vocal. Save that setting.
Then next week, try slightly different attack/release times and hear how the character changes. Compression isn't math — it's ears.
